Coro Ragazzi Children's Chorus: Fall Concert!
Saturday, November 5, 4:00 p.m.
First Congregational Church, Falmouth Village Green

The Coro Ragazzi Children’s Chorus will perform in concert on Saturday, November 5, 4:00 PM, at First Congregational Church, 68 Main Street in Falmouth. The program features a special concert version of Humperdinck’s opera Hansel and Gretel preceded by a group of songs from a variety of cultural traditions. The concert is designed to be enjoyed by both children and adults.

This presentation is based on the opera by nineteenth century composer Engelbert Humperdinck. The libretto for the opera was written by his sister based on the fairy tale of the same name by the brothers Grimm. She convinced her brother to create music from songs she had written for her children. Eventually, the songs and additional music were turned into a full-length opera.

Coro Ragazzi will perform a condensed version of the opera, in English, adapted and arranged by chorus director John Yankee. Mr. Yankee has carved a 25-minute work from a two-hour opera which retains the essence of this beloved story and the charming folk-music quality of the score.

Vera Shipunova, a member of the chorus from East Falmouth who sings the part of the Mother, believes “the audience will find the piece interesting because people know the tale but children will be interpreting it in their own way, from their own perspective.” The chorus will be accompanied by a small chamber ensemble including Stephanie Weaver, piano, Mary Sholkovitz, flute, and Vi Taylor, cello.

Coro Ragazzi Children's Chorus was founded in January 2010 for a Falmouth Chorale performance of Carmina Burana. Led by John Yankee, the auditioned chorus focuses on developing proper vocal technique, while building musical literacy. Its mission is to provide motivated 10 to 14 year old students an opportunity to come together, learn, be challenged, get special training, and become part of a unique and truly remarkable musical group.

“It’s very, very fun,” said Samuel Perry, a member of the chorus from Monument Beach. He added that he also values the opportunity “to learn to use my voice to create a better sound.”

Tickets are available at the door, in advance at Eight Cousins in Falmouth, and online. The price of tickets is $12 for adults and $5 for students 18-years and younger.
